This Piece
This is one of my earliest paintings after I stopped painting in 2010. It took me three years to want to pick a brush up again. I was living in the grossest basement in upper DC. It had poor ventilation, rats were always scurrying between the walls, and there was even a fucking plant from the outside growing into my apartment. The mold was ruining my books and my health.
I looked to painting as a way to reflect and vent. I named this abstract piece “Geometria Organica” because I think of the relationship between the abstract and the fidelity of the precise. I was painting organic shapes were I was trying to bring focus and make sense of them. To take their natural shape and give them forms I could label and understand. This piece jumpstarted the recurring theme of squares showing themselves throughout my work these past eight years.
