Who You Are or Yet to Be
This is another piece that was made around the time I kept playing with organic geometries. I don’t know why I chose these squares specifically, but something I know to be true is my deep fascination with the uncanny. Having dichotomies occupy the same thought and space, while seemingly in contradiction with each other is a thought I both amuse and terrify myself with.

The Uncanny in abstract visual arts isn’t a formal movement like Abstract Expressionism or Surrealism, but rather a psychological and aesthetic concept that artists have explored across different styles. Rooted in Sigmund Freud’s 1919 essay Das Unheimliche (“The Uncanny”), the idea refers to something that is simultaneously familiar and strange, evoking a sense of discomfort, eeriness, or cognitive dissonance.
The Uncanny in Abstract Visual Art
In abstract art, the uncanny manifests through visual ambiguity, distorted forms, and an unsettling use of space, color, or texture. Unlike Surrealist art, which often presents dreamlike yet recognizable imagery, uncanny abstraction removes direct references to reality while still evoking subconscious recognition. The result is an emotional tension—viewers feel drawn in yet unsettled, as if encountering something half-remembered or just beyond comprehension.
Key Characteristics of the Uncanny in Abstract Art
Distorted Familiarity – Forms that resemble organic shapes, faces, or figures but remain abstract enough to defy easy identification.
Ambiguous Space – Depth and perspective may be warped or collapsed, creating a sense of spatial uncertainty.
Disruptive Textures and Materials – The use of materials that appear decayed, melting, or unnaturally combined can provoke discomfort.
Unstable Emotion – Colors, gestures, and compositions that suggest movement, chaos, or an underlying tension contribute to the uncanny effect.
Artists working in this realm might evoke psychological unease by playing with the liminal—where beauty and horror coexist, where organic and inorganic elements blur, or where order seems perpetually on the verge of collapse. The uncanny in abstract art resists full understanding, leaving room for personal interpretation and subconscious reaction, making it one of the most emotionally charged approaches to non-representational art.
